What is LG TV Plus app?

This is an app that significantly simplifies ‘user-TV’ communication and makes it flawless and extended due to the iOS- or Android-based mobile device. You can control your smart TV, watch photos, enjoy your favorite videos and music by broadcasting them from your phone to the large TV screen. This is a great thing for LG webOS TV enthusiasts. We evaluate the app with 10/10.

Interface

The app interface is created in the way least experienced users would easily get what they want. Extremely minimalistic with huge buttons, black-and-white – it looks like an old-fashioned mobile phone menu for seniors. To a certain extent, it’s an advantage – while the target audience may include them as well. There are three basic menu items on the top: Control, Live TV and TV Menu. You can do everything you did with the remote control and easily connect your mobile data storage to watch pics, videos and play audio from your smartphone. I expected something that is designed in a more sophisticated way with nicely designed interface elements and stuff. However, the app is good for one-hand operation both on Android phones and iPhones, and it is user-friendly. My opinion – the app interface deserves 9/10.

Performance and usability

Quite surprisingly – instead of adding functions in the latest version of LG TV Plus app, the developers removed those used less frequently by the majority of users. Well, let it be. I guess I got the idea: make it so simple your granny would appreciate.

The app performance isn’t stable: it may lose connection with smart TV in 15-20% of cases, so you must restart the TV to fix it. I found this problem very common – users share their experience on Google Play and App Store and ask developers to fix it. The list of supported TV models is available in official app description on App Store and Google Play.

In general, it makes the LG Smart TV experience more convenient – you don’t need to search for the remote control if it gets stuck somewhere. Smartphones are easier to search for, right? Perhaps, developers could make use of the following use case: if I go to YouTube and want to enter a query, I must use the TV interface and type letter-by-letter. Why not make the mobile keyboard available? Maybe I just haven’t found mobile input, but in this case, please work to make it obvious – if you pay so much attention to UX simplification. The total is 9/10.

Cross-platform use

The app requires that you had a device working on Android 4.2 or later. In case you are using less than Android 6.0 you may fail to approve app permissions optionally. For Apple devices: the app works on iOS 8.0 and later. Supports iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch. There is some kind of product available for Windows Phones, so there is a chance you can have a high-quality APK. For platform support, I rate the app with 10/10.

Bottom line

I have my doubts if I should recommend you this app or not. On the one hand, it’s nice to watch videos and photos from your mobile phone in a few clicks and get an extra remote control at home. On the other hand, there are so many users who report fails to connect the app to the TV set that I’ve no idea if it works for you or not. Perhaps you can give it a try now and if it doesn’t work properly, postpone getting it until the better times.

Uncover issues before your customers do

I’ll test your utility app for its functionality, usability and consistency. I provide manual testing on Android and iOS – the physical devices, and use emulators for other OSes.
